Sun Yang won 200m freestyle gold on Tuesday night at the Fina World Championships in Gwangju, South Korea, in stunning fashion and continues to draw controversy every time he enters the pool.

Sun finished second behind Lithuanian Danas Rapsys, but the swimmer was disqualified for a false start. Neither found out until the race was over. It appeared as if Duncan Scott from Great Britain, who tied for bronze, refused to shake Sun’s hand after the win.

Sun then waved to Scott and smiled as he left the podium. Sun was the second fastest qualifier for the event and spoke to CCTV after the race. He was timed in 1 minute, 44.93 seconds.

“Our plan has been about paying attention to the pace and it was not easy winning this. I did my best to finish the race. I have to thank the [Chinese] crowd for supporting me again,” said Sun.

“Our training and persistence are paying off. I have been persistent and I kept on training to get this result.”

Sun, the Olympic champion in the 200m free, earned his third straight medal in the event at the worlds and second gold. Associated Press is reporting there was a mix of boos and cheers after Sun won.

Sun is awaiting a hearing in September at the Court of Arbitration of Sport, after the World Anti-Doping Agency appealed against a decision to clear him of a separate doping offence.

Sun had already won 400m freestyle gold on Sunday in Korea but Australian swimmer Mack Horton, 23, refused to join Sun, 27, on the podium. Horton was not in the 200m freestyle final.

Horton, who lost to Sun by 0.73 of a second in Sunday’s opening night of the swimming at the eight-day competition, also refused to shake Sun’s hand.

The two have had a bitter rivalry dating back to the 2016 Summer Games in Rio de Janeiro where Horton won the 400m and called his victory over Sun “one for the good guys”.

Sun was previously suspended by the Chinese Swimming Association for three months for using a banned substance at the time.
