Hong Kong’s men’s and women’s sevens teams are in contention for cup runs after the opening day of Asia Rugby Sevens Series action in Incheon, South Korea.

The men beat Taiwan and the Philippines to top Pool B overnight, while the women beat Sri Lanka but lost to Japan, to finish as runners-up in Pool C. Both teams have a final pool round match tomorrow with the men facing South Korea and the women play Series newcomers Malaysia.

The men opened with a 62-0 win over Taiwan. Up next was the Philippines. A close 10-5 score at half-time gave food for thought, but the game finished 20-5.

Hong Kong face South Korea in the final pool match tomorrow morning. A win would see them through to the cup semi-finals as top seeds where they would likely face China, and a loss would likely see them face Japan, also in the cup.

The women’s opening win over Sri Lanka started with captain Melody Li Nim-yan scoring a try early, in the 33-10 win.

The women were 0-5 up against Japan, but were 19-5 by half-time and ultimately lost.

They potentially have three more games of tomorrow if they are to reach the final.
