Diego Forlan arrived in Hong Kong on Thursday ahead of his unveiling as a Kitchee player.

The newly arrived forward landed at Hong Kong International Airport on Thursday afternoon along with his wife and two young sons.

The 38-year-old Uruguayan has been signed to lead the side’s first AFC Champions League campaign and will wear the number 18 shirt for the Hong Kong Premier League champions.

Upon his arrival he was met by club officials and whisked into a waiting car.

A crowd of fans had gathered to greet the former European Golden Boot winner at Hong Kong International Airport and he stopped briefly to sign autographs for the Kitchee Ultras supporters group before departing.

Forlan fans sported the jerseys of his former club Atletico Madrid and the Uruguayan national team, while others had the scarf of his J-League side Cerezo Osaka and home-made signs welcoming the new arrival to Hong Kong.

The gathered media were disappointed that Forlan was spirited away so quickly but they will get an opportunity to ask the striker questions at the club’s press conference on Friday, where he will be officially announced as a Kitchee player before his first training session on Sunday.

The Kitchee Boys ultras were happy that the club had moved to bring in a big name.

Kitchee’s first AFC Champions League game is away on February 13 before they host South Korean side Jeonbuk Hyundai on February 20 in their first home match.

The league leaders play Southern in the Hong Kong Premier League at Mong Kok Stadium on Sunday.

Fellow Hong Kong Premier League side Eastern could join Kitchee in the group stages if they come through their play-off with Vietnamese runners-up Thanh Hoa.
