The Chinese Football Association have acted swiftly to fine and ban Changchun Yatai midfielder Zhang Li, the player accused of racially abusing Shanghai Shenhua player Demba Ba when their teams met in the Chinese Super League last weekend.

However, the wording of the press release does not mention the alleged racist abuse of the Senegalese striker leading Chinese media to question exactly what the ban and fine is for.

Zhang has been fined 42,000 yuan (US$6,125) and banned for six games after being found guilty of “interfering with the match, causing chaos and giving a bad social image”.

Fellow players had rallied round the Shenhua man on social media following the allegation of racist abuse, one which his manager Wu Jingui raised in the post match press conference.

The CFA launched an investigation into the “irregularities” surrounding the game on Monday and have acted swiftly in meting out punishment.

Ba was booked in the game and may yet face action himself from the governing body.
