Rafael Nadal beat Austrian seventh seed Dominic Thiem 6-4 6-3 6-2 to claim a record-extending 11th French Open title on Sunday.

The Spanish world number one took his Roland Garros win-loss record to a jaw-dropping 86-2 as he captured his 17th Grand Slam title.

Nadal’s triumph marks the sixth consecutive grand slam won by either him or 20-times major champion Roger Federer.

The muscular Spaniard had won all 10 of his previous Roland Garros finals and although Thiem was the only man to have beaten him on clay over the past two seasons, the Austrian never threatened the claycourt master on Sunday.

However, Nadal saluted the young Austrian, saying: “He played great [over the last] two weeks. He has been a good friend and he’s one of these players the Tour needs, so well done and I’m sure he will win here in a couple of years,” said Nadal.

“I’m very happy now. It was a tough moment in the first set when I got a bit of cramp in the hand and I was very scared. The day was very humid ... against a player who pushes you to the limit. It’s amazing now and I can’t describe my feelings because its not even a dream to win here an 11th time because it’s impossible to think something like this.”
