US Open champion Emma Raducanu is set to make her return to the court at Indian Wells next week where the 18-year-old will be the No 18 seed but further afield she is “extremely excited” for the Transylvania Open.

“I am extremely excited to play at the Transylvania Open, in front of Romanian fans,” she said, as reported by Romania’s Actual de Cluj website.

“My father is from Romania, so to participate for the first time in a WTA competition in the country where he was born is a special moment and I can’t wait to get to Cluj!”

Raducanu, whose father Ian is Romanian and her mother Renee is Chinese, will play in the WTA 250 event at the BT Arena from October 23-31.

She will be joined there by one of her tennis idols, Romanian star Simona Halep, who she had described as a role model along with China’s Li Na.

Raducanu has already promised her growning number of fans in China that she will play there next year, when international sporting events are expected to resume in the country.

“It’s a pity that I can’t go to China this year but will go and play next year,” the 18-year-old said in a video on China’s Twitter-like Weibo, her first post on the social media site.

In the meantime, the British No 1, who won 20 straight sets to lift the US Open crown in New York, will be handed a bye into the second round at Indian Wells.

She and the rest of the top 32 will skip the first round at the California tournament often referred to as “the fifth grand slam”.

Raducanu is chasing a spot in the WTA Finals, in which she is currently 14th on the list with the top eight getting invited to the end of season showpiece in Guadalajara, Mexico.

The path to glory in Palm Springs is made a little easier in the absence of world No 1 Ashleigh Barty and world No 7 Naomi Osaka, both of whom are sitting the tournament out.

Former world No 1s Andy Murray and Kim Clijsters were also handed wild cards along with Raducanu for this year’s return to Indian Wells, which begins on October 6.
