Tencent is the world’s biggest gaming company by revenue, but about 90% of that revenue comes from China. Now the Chinese tech giant says it wants to grow its user base overseas after Tencent Games underwent a major rebranding effort.
Tencent Senior Vice President Steven Ma recently said that Tencent Games aims to have as many users overseas as it has in China. Tencent has already been exploring ways to expand overseas, including looking into expanding its partnership with Nintendo to build console games for US gamers.
Last week, Tencent’s gaming unit adopted a new logo and an English slogan: “Spark More.” The English phrase is displayed more prominently over the Chinese slogan “Discover Unlimited Possibilities.” The Tencent Games logo has also been changed from a T-shaped symbol to a stylized image of a spark.
Last quarter, popular mobile games like PUBG Mobile and Call of Duty Mobile helped Tencent Games pull in 3 billion yuan (US$427.1 million) outside of China. Online games have especially been a bright spot for Tencent, with revenue up 11% from the third quarter last year.
