After its success in India, Oppo sub-brand Realme is considering becoming an independent brand, according to Taiwanese Digitimes. Realme has reportedly established its own R&D team, and it plans to create its own ecosystem and production line.

Chung Hsiang-Wei, chief commercial officer of Realme Taiwan, said that Realme will continue to share resources with its parent company. This could make the brand more similar to OnePlus, which also shares resources with Oppo.

Although it was founded just last year, Realme has taken off in some countries. It's now the fourth most popular brand in India, where shipments grew 400 percent in the third quarter compared with the same period last year, according to IDC. Its handsets are sold in more than 20 countries and regions, according to Chung.
Brand spinoffs have become popular among smartphone makers in China trying to cater to different types of consumers. Huawei, for instance, has Honor, Xiaomi has Redmi and Vivo has iQOO. Chung said that Realme and Oppo will target different users, noting that 60% of Oppo users are women while 60% of Realme users are men.
