This week’s round up of our top stories includes comments by Huawei’s founder about the recent sale of its Honor budget brand, China claiming to overtake the US in artificial intelligence patents, and indications that Microsoft’s Xbox Series X will be released in China next year.
Divorcing from Huawei
Huawei Technologies founder Ren Zhengfei hopes budget smartphone brand Honor, which Huawei recently sold, will become its former parent company’s strongest global competitor.
“Be the strongest competitor of Huawei in the world, surpass Huawei, and even use defeating Huawei as your motivation,” Ren said at a farewell party for Honor, according to a transcript released on Huawei’s official employee community platform.
Huawei, the world’s largest telecommunications equipment maker and China’s biggest smartphone vendor, announced the sale of all Honor assets to Shenzhen Zhixin New Information Technology, a consortium of over 30 agents and dealers, in a statement on November 17.
The deal came after the US imposed tighter restrictions on Huawei in May this year, restricting its access to Huawei’s acquisition of chips made with American software and technology, even from companies outside the US.

Comparing the sale to “divorce”, Ren said Honor will be divested completely in compliance to international rules. “We should not be connected any more. We are adults. We should handle things separately, strictly follow compliance management, strictly abide by international rules and each achieve our own goals,” he said.
Explaining Honor’s sale, Ren said US sanctions against Huawei threatened millions of jobs as well as supplies from Huawei’s dealers and agents from 170 countries.

“We cannot drag innocent people into the water because of our own suffering,” Ren said. “After the sale, Honor quickly resumed production under the leadership of Zhixin to solve problems with upstream and downstream partners.”
Ren warned Honor will face “problems bigger than any other new companies” and called on his former employees to embrace globalisation and learn from companies in the UK, US, EU, Japan, Taiwan and South Korea as well as cooperate with domestic partners.
Since it was launched in 2013, Honor has become one of the most popular Chinese smartphone brands, shipping over 70 million units annually.
AI patent battle
China now leads the world in artificial intelligence patent applications, surpassing the United States for the first time, according to Li Yuxiao, deputy head of the Chinese Academy of Cyberspace Studies, who spoke at the 7th World Internet Conference (WIC).
Yujie Xue writes that Li, whose agency is affiliated with industry regulator the Cyberspace Administration of China, cited figures to show that China filed more than 110,000 AI patent applications last year, more than the number the US filed.
“China is strengthening its independence and technological capabilities in internet information technology,” said Li, who did not specify the number of AI patents filed by the US in 2019.

The US and China are jostling to dominate advanced technologies, from 5G to quantum computing and AI.
The sharp rise in China’s AI patent applications, funding and commercial deployment in surveillance activities prompted the US government to take action in October last year, when a number of the country’s AI tech champions were added to Washington’s trade blacklist. That has restricted their access to American hi-tech components like semiconductors and software.
China, which has laid out plans to become the global AI leader by 2030, is also being challenged by the technology’s unclear application scenarios, high investment, and security and ethical issues.
Both China and the US see the potential of AI technology in helping improve the efficiency of their respective economies, including in industries such as manufacturing, transport and logistics, health care and education.
Last year, surveillance was the biggest single end user of AI in China, accounting for 53.8 per cent of all AI-powered applications, according to research firm iiMedia. Finance was second at 15.8 per cent, followed by marketing at 11.6 per cent and transport at 4.2 per cent.
Greenlighting Xbox
Josh Ye writes that Microsoft Corp’s next-generation Xbox Series X is expected to be released in China next year after a recent decision by the country’s regulators to grant the company a certification for an unnamed video game console.
The US tech giant received a China Compulsory Certificate, also known as the 3C mark, from the Certification and Accreditation Administration of the People’s Republic of China. That followed a separate 3C mark granted to the company for an unnamed console in June this year.
Analysts indicated that these certifications point to the imminent launch of the Xbox Series X, along with its lower-grade variant the Xbox Series S, in the world’s largest video games market. Sales of the two new game consoles started on November 10 in many markets around the world. The Chinese mainland was not among the launch countries.

“We currently expect the Xbox Series X to launch in the first half of 2021,” said Daniel Ahmad, senior analyst at game consultancy Niko Partners.
The stakes are high for Microsoft’s latest consoles to attract avid gamers in China, following high demand recorded by Sony’s new PlayStation 5 (PS5) in the world’s second largest economy. Scalpers in China have been taking pre-orders for the standard PS5 console at a cost of more than US$1,500 per unit, which is three times the suggested retail price.
Disruptions to production caused by the coronavirus pandemic are also expected to result in near-term supply chain constraints for the new Xbox series and PS5 consoles, ahead of a wide release in China.
Still, the projected late release of the new Xbox and PS5 devices in China next year would mark significant progress for the domestic console gaming market. For nearly 15 years from 2000, console gaming was officially banned on the mainland because of regulators’ concerns over the negative influence of console games’ content on the country’s youth.
