Huawei at Mobile World Congress Shanghai
MWC Shanghai, the regional edition of the world’s biggest mobile industry trade show, kicked off on Tuesday amid the ongoing US-China tech war, providing a major showcase for the latest innovation from the likes of telecommunications equipment giants Huawei Technologies Co and ZTE Corp.
The annual event organised by the GSM Association, which represents the interests of more than 750 wireless network operators and almost 400 companies in the broader mobile ecosystem, was touted as the telecoms industry’s first large-scale hybrid event of its kind.
Huawei made a confident showing of its 5G offerings, both for consumers and enterprises, with one of the largest exhibition footprints at the event, and revealed one of their most expensive phones to date: the foldable Mate X2. This belied, however, the pressure the company is under. In his keynote speech, rotating chairman Ken Hu Houkun reiterated that US sanctions have made it tough for the company and revealed that 2020 saw “slight” growth.
“The past year was, indeed, very difficult [for Huawei], [but] I think it is the same for everyone. Huawei is no exception,” said Hu.
Just one day later, founder Ren Zhengfei was reported to have told employees at the company’s 2021 annual work conference that they must try to use “third-class” components to manufacture “first-class” products amid stifling US trade restrictions.

“In the past, we have ‘spare parts’ for high-end products,” said Ren. “But now the US has completely blocked Huawei’s access [to such components] and even commercialised products cannot be supplied to us.”
In related news, GSMA’s head of Greater China told the Post that a geographic split of global 5G standards is not likely to happen, despite the ongoing trade and tech dispute between Washington and Beijing.
“The 3GPP hasn’t excluded any Chinese companies so far,” said Chen, referring to the main industry body that helps set international telecoms standards.
ByteDance’s global moves
ByteDance, which seems to be getting better treatment under newly-elected President Biden, looks to be rethinking its global structure as it moves the current head of Toutiao, the company’s flagship content aggregation app, to Singapore to supervise Tiktok’s R&D, which includes their “secret sauce” recommendation algorithm.
As with TikTok’s interim head, Vanessa Pappas, Zhu will report directly to ByteDance founder and chief executive Zhang Yiming. TikTok’s international operations are managed separately from its domestic sibling app, Douyin, which is supervised by Kelly Zhang Nan, the chief of ByteDance’s China business.
At home, ByteDance is looking for new frontiers for Douyin. The domestic app recently launched a group-buying page for restaurant and hotel coupons, similar to a feature offered by Meituan, China’s leading online shopping platform for services. The new Douyin feature is currently available only in big cities such as Beijing, Shanghai, Hangzhou and Chengdu.

ByteDance first introduced group-buying services last year in a bid to help shops promote themselves during the Covid-19 pandemic. Back then, customers could only find coupons on the Douyin page of each store instead of a single dedicated page listing all deals.
The Beijing-based company is also moving aggressively into gaming and has pushed its flagship gaming studio Nuverse to centre stage by launching a stand-alone website for the development and publishing team, a sign of its commitment to gaming as the Beijing-based unicorn seeks to profit from its vast user base and challenge arch rival Tencent.

Analysts said the company’s gaming strategy is taking a page out of Tencent’s playbook of funnelling social media traffic into games to create monetisation opportunities. An earlier report by the tech-focused Chinese online media 36Kr said ByteDance had about 2,000 gaming developers at the end of 2020, double the number from 2019.
The dim future for a ‘Clubhouse of China’
Over the Lunar New Year, many start-ups and established companies rushed to create their own version of Clubhouse, the hit social audio app that made waves in China in early February before getting abruptly blocked.
Inke, an early player in live streaming, was one of those companies. It was able to build a clone of Clubhouse, with very similar features and design, in less than a week – just in time to go live on the eve of the Lunar New Year. Less than two weeks later and the app can longer be found on Android or Apple app stores for download. The company told the Post that it removed its Clubhouse clone Duihuaba from app stores because the app is incomplete.

The founder of Lizhi, however, told the Post just one day earlier that making a version of Clubhouse that could survive in China’s strict content regulation environment was almost impossible.
“It will be very difficult to create a Clubhouse-like app in China. The form of Clubhouse will most likely be altered in China,” Marco Lai Jinnan said. “The regulatory environments are different, content safety requirements are also quite different. So it’s hard to just replicate its existing form.”
This perspective comes from experience: In 2018, the company launched Zhiya in China, a social audio app similar to Clubhouse. It was removed from app stores in China along with 25 other audio apps in June 2019 as part of a clean-up campaign by regulators in the lead-up to the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China that October. They soon launched Tiya, an English version of Zhiya, on the US market and have found success with young gamers interested in using the app to talk about social games like Roblox and Among Us.
