China’s second-largest chip maker said its equipment procurement process remains smooth, calling a recent report that Chinese chip makers may face further US export restrictions “baseless”.
Hua Hong Semiconductor has been certified as a “validated end-user” of sensitive American technologies by the US government, said company president Tang Junjun during its first-quarter earnings call with analysts on Thursday.
Chief financial officer Daniel Wang added that Hua Hong has obtained approval from US authorities to import from the country.
US mulls crippling ban on exports to Chinese chip makers: report
The executives were responding to questions surrounding a report by The Information this week that Washington is considering banning American suppliers from selling advanced equipment to Chinese chip makers.
Such a move would tighten the screws on Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corp (SMIC), China’s top chip foundry, as well as Hua Hong Semiconductor, ChangXin Memory Technologies and Yangtze Memory Technologies Corp, all of which rely on core US technology to various extents to fabricate chips.
Wang said the report was “completely inaccurate and baseless”.
Hua Hong is proactively working to boost the monthly production capacity of its 12-inch fab in Wuxi, a city in eastern Jiangsu province, from about 65,000 wafers to 95,500 wafers. Any sanctions from the US could deal a blow to these plans.
Hong Kong-listed Hua Hong generated US$594.6 million in revenue in the first quarter, up 95 per cent year-on-year and 12.6 per cent from the previous quarter, according to its latest financial report released on Thursday.
Hua Hong forecast its second-quarter revenue to be about US$615 million, with gross profit margin reaching 29 per cent. It expects both parameters to be higher than in the first quarter, despite disruptions from the Covid-19 lockdowns in Shanghai, where the company is based.
Shanghai chip maker has two-thirds of workers sleeping in factory
SMIC, which also released its first-quarter results on Thursday, said it generated US$1.84 billion in revenue in the first quarter, up 66.9 per cent year-on-year and 16.6 per cent from the previous quarter.
First-quarter net profits came in at US$447.2 million, a 182 per cent jump from the same period last year, but down from US$533.7 million in the previous quarter.
Both Hua Hong and SMIC were among the first batch of 666 enterprises approved by the Shanghai government to resume production on condition they meet certain Covid-19 control requirements. “The company has put in place effective measures to prevent and control the spread of the coronavirus, and all staff members have implemented them carefully,” said Tang.
Hua Hong in early April ordered its workers to stay inside its dormitories to minimise disruptions to production. The company said its overall capacity utilisation rate in the first four months remained at around 95 per cent.
Tang said Hua Hong asked about 1,600 workers to return to its three 8-inch fabs the night before Shanghai went into a citywide lockdown. “Over the past eight weeks, about 3,000 workers have been living and working together inside the fabs to ensure our production continuity,” he added.
China’s March chip output decelerates amid supply chain strain
The Shanghai lockdown since late March, coupled with other geopolitical risks, could cloud the global semiconductor market this year, resulting in “impacts on both the supply side and end markets such as smartphones and cars, [which have] huge demand for semiconductor components”, said Roger Sheng, a senior semiconductor analyst at research firm Gartner.
“The semiconductor market is facing a lot of volatile factors this year,” he said.
Hua Hong was the only Chinese foundry among 10 global top foundries that had revenue growth of over 60 per cent last year, according to data from Gartner. Two other foundries that saw similarly robust growth were Samsung Electronics and Taiwan-based Powerchip Semiconductor Manufacturing Corp.
Hua Hong saw its revenue grow by 70 per cent year-on-year, hitting a record high of US$1.63 billion in 2021, as its mature 55-nanometre and 65-nanometre nodes became popular on the back of brisk demand from automobile electronics and smart healthcare.
