Pony Ma Huateng, the founder and CEO of Tencent Holdings, China’s most valuable internet conglomerate, said technology can be used for good in an appearance at an artificial intelligence conference (AI) in Shanghai on Thursday, avoiding any mention of Beijing’s recent crackdown on Big Tech.
In a speech delivered remotely by audio, delegates at the World Artificial Intelligence Conference in Shanghai on Thursday heard Ma talk about the collaboration between his company and the National Astronomical Observatory to search for new stars, and he repeated his company’s slogan of “tech for good”, adopted in 2019 for its 21st anniversary.
“For the past year, AI has been used in health care, city governance and non-contact medical treatment, which makes our life more convenient,” Ma said.
Ma has not made a public appearance since March, when he attended the National People’s Congress, the country’s annual parliamentary gathering, as a delegate member. Before that, the Tencent boss had been out of public view for more than a year.
Tencent, the social media and gaming giant, is not the subject of any publicly announced antitrust probe, although it reportedly is being probed for possible monopoly behaviour and Beijing may block its planned merger of live streaming giants Huya and Douyu, according to separate reports from Reuters.

Tencent has also been fined repeatedly, along with China’s other Big Tech firms, by the State Administration for Market Regulation. The agency has announced 22 fines of 500,000 yuan (US$77,000) each, of which five were imposed on Tencent for irregularities in merger deals.
Ma’s appearance at the AI event, even if only via audio, could be a signal that he is in Beijing’s good graces. The conference was organised by the National Development and Reform Commission, the Ministry of Science and Technology, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, the Cyberspace Administration of China, as well as the Shanghai Municipal Government.
Li Qiang, the Communist Party secretary of Shanghai, attended the event on Thursday along with Shanghai mayor Gong Zheng.
Jack Ma, the founder of Alibaba Group Holding, has been a regular speaker at the AI event, but was absent this year. In 2019, Ma appeared on stage with Tesla founder Elon Musk in Shanghai, and last year Ma showed up in hologram form, urging people to embrace technology and not worry about it.
Alibaba is the owner of the South China Morning Post.
The AI conference comes just days after Beijing instigated a probe into Didi Chuxing, the ride-hailing giant, on national security grounds, and published a policy document to tighten control on overseas listings of Chinese companies.
Zhou Hongyi, CEO and co-founder of cybersecurity giant Qihoo 360, said at the AI event that data security will become increasingly important.
“A company is being investigated now, which has been a trending topic in recent days … The case shows that when data accumulates and quantitative change produces qualitative change, data security will directly connect to national security,” Zhou said, without naming Didi.
The event also saw video appearances by former US diplomat Henry Kissinger and SoftBank founder Masayoshi Son. Kissinger said that governments must consider the role of AI in the economy, while Son noted that many industries – including transport, health care, finance and education – will be “transformed” by AI.
Although Softbank is the biggest shareholder in Didi, which has lost a third of its value over the last three trading days following Beijing’s crackdown, Son did not mention Didi in his remarks at the conference.
