Hopes ride on Macau ferry service to speed up Tuen Mun’s development
The launch of a new passenger ferry service from Tuen Mun to Macau is expected to attract more tourists to the western part of New Territories and boost retail sales in the district, according to Anna Hong, deputy general manager of Shun Tak-China Travel Ship Management.
Many tourists from Macau and China seldom visit New Territories West. The new route will attract them to the district.
The company last year won the right to manage the Tuen Mun Ferry Terminal and operate passenger ferry services between Tuen Mun and Macau as well as ports in the Pearl River Delta. The new cross-border routes represent an extension of the company’s service network on top of the routes from Tsim Sha Tsui to Macau and Shun Tak Centre in Sheung Wan to Macau.
The seven-year tenancy agreement for the Tuen Mun Ferry Terminal commenced on November 16. The passenger ferry service between Tuen Mun and Macau is expected to launch on January 28.
Hong said she expects routes to other major Pearl River Delta ports to be introduced in subsequent phases.
Tuen Mun is strategically located in close proximity to fast-growing communities such as Yuen Long, Northern Lantau, Hung Shui Kiu and Shenzhen Bay Port.
The service will offer unparalleled convenience to passengers in Tuen Mun and nearby districts to travel to Macau and other major Pearl River Delta cities.
Hong said the new ferry route between Tuen Mun and Macau will take approximately 35 to 40 minutes, shorter than the existing routes.
