Haier was founded as Qingdao Refrigerator Co in 1984, although the company’s roots date back to the 1920s. It is the dominant whiteware manufacturer in China and has been expanding offshore. In 2005, Haier made a US$1.28 billion, or US$16 per share, bid for Maytag, which was ultimately bought by Whirlpool Corp for US$1.7 billion. In 2009, it bought 20 per cent of New Zealand whiteware firm Fisher & Paykel (F&P) at the height of the global financial crisis, and won control of F&P in October 2012.

This year marks half a century of formal diplomatic relations between China and the European Union, as well as the 25th anniversary of the founding of the European Union Chamber of Commerce in China. The fourth story in our series examining ties between the two powers focuses on China’s efforts to influence the bodies that set global manufacturing standards, an arena where Europe plays a leading role.
The 19th-century German industrialist Werner von Siemens once famously remarked that “he who...

When policymakers start using internet slang to describe the economy, it is a sign something is not right. The word neijuan was once used by Chinese students to depict burnout from seemingly pointless competition. Now it is showing up in policy language, to explain the growing economic strain caused by China’s price war.
Too much supply and weak demand are pushing prices down. The deflationary pressure is building not just on company profits, but on the growth model that China has relied on for...

July 9, 2024, may be remembered as a day of humiliation for China’s artificial intelligence community. On that day, US start-up OpenAI, the global leader in AI model development, blocked developers in China – including Hong Kong and Macau – from using its GPT models.

Chinese household appliance giant Haier has introduced a front-loading washing machine capable of handling three separate loads simultaneously, a feature that has some dubbing it the “lazybones’ washing machine”.
The novel design that has three separate drums on the front allows users to wash coats and lingerie separately. Many people in China have traditionally not used washing machines for undergarments, preferring instead to hand wash such items.
The new machine, which Haier launched under...

Historically, China has pursued strategies to stimulate domestic spending since the late 1990s, when the country began producing more goods than it could consume or export. Two primary schools of thought have emerged on how to encourage increased spending.
The first focuses on the...

Many Chinese electric vehicle (EV) makers are shifting from exporting vehicles to the European Union to producing them within Europe to find ways around tariffs. While the rationale of this strategy is sound, its successful implementation can be challenging.
Smart TV owners in China are tired of televisions that spam them with ads from the moment they start up. Local consumer rights groups are now pushing back, claiming the ads infringe on users’ rights. One group published a draft on Tuesday for regulating smart TV advertising that covers ads displayed during start-up. The Jiangsu Consumer Council’s proposal stipulates that users should be able to turn off TV ads and that the duration ads should not exceed 30 seconds, local media reported.

The US-China phase-one trade deal, under which Beijing committed to huge purchases of agricultural products, is a shot in the arm for farmers in America’s heartland. But the overall picture still looks grim, especially for Chinese investment in the US.
According to global research firm Mergermarket, purchases of US firms by Chinese buyers has plummeted by 95 per cent, from US$55.3 billion in 2016, to US$3 billion in 2018.
It can be argued that with China purchasing more US farm goods, more jobs...

Shifting China’s growth model has been imperative for the country’s leadership amid a slowing economy and the trade war with the United States. Encouraging brand building could be the linchpin of this endeavour.
The significance of brands in a knowledge-driven economy has never been lost on Beijing’s top cadres. As early as June 2016, the State Council issued a landmark document hailing the “pioneering” role of brands in facilitating supply-demand structural reforms. This marked the beginning of...

Haier Group, the mainland's largest home-appliance maker, is seeking to spin off its computer division as early as 2009 and will probably choose a listing in Shanghai rather than Hong Kong, according to a report.

The Qingdao-based company yesterday declined to comment.

A spokesperson for Hong Kong-listed Haier Electronics Group also did not comment as the unit represents only the parent's washing-machine and water-heater businesses.

A senior manager with Haier Group said the company would...

News that Haier's refrigerator plant in Camden, South Carolina, was hiring 128 more workers made the headlines in March in a state that has one of the highest unemployment rates in the United States.

The hiring was a result of a US$6 million expansion at Haier America Refrigerators, the manufacturing branch of Haier America, in the first phase of a US$100 million, 1,000-job plan announced by Haier last year during Vice-Premier Wu Yi's visit to the city.

Haier's operation in the US sits well with the mainland's strategy of expanding investment in the US, says Tarun Khanna of the Harvard Business School. 'It is a company with a proven track record in China. Also, it has been tested against the world's best multinationals and has done fine.

'It's a company with some real strength so it's a good one to spearhead Chinese expansion. And it avoids politically more volatile situations that have run into trouble, like buying oil or energy...
