I keep old Beach Boys tracks on my iPod in the vain hope their lilting refrains will drown out the cacophony that is Hong Kong, as heard from my desk. Nearby construction sites have been sending out bad vibrations for years - but Rhonda is no help and it's no fun, fun, fun.
For more than 233.7 weeks (not that I am counting), I've tried to redress the noise karma. I've even removed the pictures that were knocked from walls that shudder from the incessant pounding of drills.
I've tried listening...

That's Why God Made the Radio (CD)
The Beach Boys' latest album, That's Why God Made the Radio, is a celebration of their 50th anniversary. Through many ups and downs, the band is as iconic as ever, with a world tour and a stop in Hong Kong two weeks ago.
The album is a comfortable listen. The first track, Think About the Days, reintroduces the Boys as dreamy, haunting voices who pride themselves on vocal harmonies. But with not many lyrics, the short tune is a confusing mesh of humming ad-libs...

David Hockney's long-anticipated exhibition, at the Royal Academy of Arts in London, is a major letdown. Hockney was a high-profile English painter in the British pop art movement in the '60s. But A Bigger Picture is an exhibit of his more recent works, from 2004 to last year.
The works are based on his observations, memories and imaginative visions of landscapes across Britain and the US. He uses a wide variety of media including good-old oils and even iPad prints.
Critics have hailed the...

The sport of mountain biking has been thriving on the hilly landscapes of Hong Kong. Biking veteran Tiger So Fu tells Young Post about popular local routes and the precautions you should take while pursuing this exciting but risky sport.
Routes:
Tai Lam Reservoir Loop
Take a bus to the Gold Coast and make your way to the Tai Lam Chung Reservoir. The 30km-long route with two loops follows the reservoir's shoreline. The scenery is nice. The route is generally flat with a few sharp corners, which...

Iris Cheng Chi-lan is bubbling with energy. That may come as a surprise, given that the young Greenpeace campaigner is just back from the Arctic - and a prison in chilly Greenland, no less.
On June 4, Cheng and 17 of her fellow activists from around the world staged a raid on the Leiv Eiriksson oil rig, rented by Cairn Energy, to demand an oil spill response plan. They were detained, then deported. Cheng is now back in Hong Kong and remains undaunted.
'We decided to go directly to the rig,'...

The first-ever Airmazing Race, a self-styled 'scavenger hunt for clean air', took place on June 25 on the bustling streets of Hong Kong.
Some 300 youngsters (aged from 11 to 18) and more than 75 schools participated in the event organised by the Clean Air Network.
The initiative was fashioned after the reality TV show The Amazing Race to raise awareness of the city's air pollution.
Participants, dressed in blue as a symbol of clear skies, had to finish eight assigned tasks, including fun...
