For Celine Lean Yew-lin, taking law classes online at the University of Cambridge requires almost superhuman multitasking: jotting notes as she listens to the teacher, checking that she is working on the correct document, and finding the unmute button when she wants to speak.
Lean – a blind 23-year-old Malaysian student at Cambridge University’s law school – lost her vision at the age of four after a battle with leukaemia. The cancer and her chemotherapy treatments resulted in her retina...

The return of face-to-face teaching in Hong Kong schools offers a vital opportunity to rethink the objectives of in-person classes amid the increasing digitisation of education.
This provides many possibilities for incorporating a “blended” learning approach involving both online and offline components. This can radically transform Hong Kong’s education system, thereby enhancing students’ learning experience.
The Covid-19 pandemic has accelerated the transition to online modes of learning...

The #BlackLivesMatter social movement in the United States has gained further momentum following the death of African American George Floyd. It has brought the issue of racism to the front line. This is a good time to examine the problem of racism in Hong Kong.
In Hong Kong, where 92 per cent of the population are Chinese, there has been a long-standing problem of racism. Ethnic minorities, who make up eight per cent of the population, often face discrimination by the local Chinese...

In what seemed like a blur, my first (and hopefully last) virtual university semester has ended. Under normal circumstances, the end of terms at Cambridge would be followed by a week of post-exam celebrations in mid-June, marked by fireworks and garden parties in the summer sun.
But this year, the onset of summer came with a click of my mouse, as I submitted my last online exam. Despite all this, I’m still looking forward to my summer holidays.
Reflecting on the past two months of “Zoom...

It is eight years since the Hong Kong government tried to introduce its now-infamous ‘National Education’ module into the school curriculum.
Since then, the city has been engaged in an ongoing debate over whether civic education – the teaching of the rights and duties of citizens of a certain place – is a tool for fostering a sense of citizenship and civic responsibility, or a form of “brainwashing”.
At the same time, the views and civic identities of Hong Kong’s young and old have become...

Dr Philip Beh has spent the past 38 years working as a forensic pathologist in Hong Kong, and he says that doctors like him actually play a far bigger role in solving crimes in real life than you see on TV.

Plastic pollution in Hong Kong remains a major issue. Greenpeace East Asia reports that more than 17 million pieces of plastic are flushed into the Shing Mun River in Sha Tin every year. Given the severity of this issue, the Hong Kong government’s current policies are not enough to...

An incident involving a “peeping Tom” was recently publicised on social media by a female student at the National University of Singapore (NUS). A peeping Tom is someone who spies on a person when they are not fully dressed or naked.
Monica Baey noticed that she was being filmed while taking a late-night shower in her hostel bathroom. She reported the matter to the police who gave the offender, a male student, a 12-month conditional warning, while NUS suspended him for a semester, banned him...

In Britain, the last term of each year is known as the exam term at university. At my university, there are designated “quiet periods” during this time, the libraries become very full, and society events are minimised to give students ample time to revise.
I will be sitting my first university exams this year and experiencing exam term for myself is, of course, daunting and stress-inducing. However, what I have learned in my time here is that everything is a matter of perspective. It doesn’t...

For Leen Youssef, though, the experiences of Syrian refugees are not just headlines but a lived reality. The 27-year-old and her family left the Syrian city of Aleppo in October 2016, and she is now living and studying in Paris.

The industrial fishing industry has long provoked backlash from many environmental groups for unsustainable practices. The French Atlantic coast has, since January this year, been the “recipient” of 1,100 dead dolphins. The sheer scale and number of carcasses littering the beaches has been attributed to dolphins accidentally becoming caught in nets and drowning. Their bodies are then mutilated when fishermen try to free their nets.
Although the situation has prompted French ecology minister...

Hey, everyone! Ever since I was young, I felt like I’m too bold, too opinionated, and too straight-forward. Unlike the people around me who said one thing and did another, I didn’t follow in their footsteps. I’ve always had very concrete beliefs, though at some points, I did start to question myself and wonder if I was wrong. It was a tough journey because it took me a long time to accept myself for who I am. People gave me a hard time, especially because my flaws were their highlights!

While much work has been done on monitoring the extent of such environmental damage, viable solutions to these problems have seemed few and far between. This however, might be about to change.
In Indonesia, rampant deforestation by forest fires has been fuelled by the demand for more land in which to grow palm trees for palm oil. Unfortunately, this land grows on top of peat swamps, which are comprised...

Dr Philip Beh has spent the past 34 years working as a forensic pathologist in Hong Kong, and he says that forensic doctors actually play a far bigger role in solving crimes in real life than you get to see on TV.
A forensic doctor’s work is not confined to the autopsy room. “Crime series’ rarely show the forensic doctor being one of the first people to get...

Pathology, he says, takes a long time and cases are not always solved within an hour. Sometimes the cause of death is never found, even though families expect the pathologist to have all the answers.
On crime shows, Beh says, the pathologists are always being harassed by the police or lawyers not to reveal certain information,...

Lost in the mists of time
Fog. Hong Kong would look like a fairy’s paradise and I could shoot my own movie with pixies flying around! No, just joking. I want to stay hidden from public view. I would stalk my friends, finding out their deepest, darkest secrets (Pssttt! I won’t tell anybody!).
I mean, how hard is it to pretend to be another person if there was mist everywhere!? I could help the police solve their cases and maybe there would be no more school because of the weather. Wouldn’t that...

Having watched TED Talks since I was young, it has always been a dream of mine to some day be able to share with others something I had managed to achieve. So early last year, when the head organizers of TEDxTSIS began accepting applications, there was absolutely no hesitation at all for me.
The theme for this year’s TEDx talk was “The Great Frontier”; but rather than it taking that to mean challenges and revolutionary developments, I interpreted it as thinking outside the box to change...

1 Precious amulet
A 0.4 increase in my GPA score coincided with my buying a Japanese amulet, or "Omamori", while studying last year. Now, I often make sure I have that amulet in my hands when I say my prayers before exams. Though, truth be told, I believe studying hard is actually more important!Marilyn Ma, 19, Chinese University

Many students would be familiar with the crisp new ink of exam papers fresh from the printer as they are placed in front of you. But not many may know of the origin that small, inconspicuous, but important green filing tag that stops all your pages from falling apart. In fact, it was a worker at the Hong Kong Factory for the Blind, who had pieced it together for your use.
Since its establishment in 1963, this factory, located in Kowloon City, is the only factory of its kind in Hong Kong –...

Bemoaning the Bard
I would have dinner with William Shakespeare, so I could tell him how much grief he has caused present-day students with his literary works, as fine as they are.

A grand old time

Better you than me
When it is raining heavily, I enjoy staying indoors, looking out of the window and watching the passers-by fighting with the rain and getting wet. That gives me a sense of schadenfreude. It makes me glad to be inside.
Charis Chan Cheuk-Lok, 14, Carmel Secondary School
