For Roger Riera, the new Kitchee centre-back, it was both a blessing and a curse that his emergence at Barcelona coincided with the club’s greatest era.
An awestruck Riera trained with Lionel Messi, Neymar and Andres Iniesta. On the flip side, he could see no way into the Catalans’ glittering squad, so he left for Nottingham Forest three months after captaining Barcelona to the 2014 Uefa Youth League title.
“It was always my dream to reach the Barcelona first team, and when we won the youth...

Former Inter Milan boss Simone Inzaghi was revealed as the new coach of Saudi Arabia’s Al-Hilal on Thursday, days before they take part in the new-look Club World Cup.
The Italian, who led Inter to a heavy defeat in Saturday’s Champions League final, had earlier played down rumours of a two-year deal worth €50 million (US$57 million).
“I am Simone Inzaghi and today begins my story with Al-Hilal,” he said in a slickly produced video posted on X, in which he sips Arabian coffee and pins an...

Brazilian striker Neymar said on Thursday that former Paris Saint-Germain teammate Kylian Mbappe became “jealous” of his relationship with Lionel Messi when the Argentine superstar joined the club in 2021.
Speaking on a podcast hosted by former Brazil striker Romario, Neymar blamed a clash of egos for the failure of the three stars to gel during their spell together at the French club.
The 32-year-old Neymar, who left PSG for Saudi club Al-Hilal in 2023, said he initially got on well with Mbappe...

Paris Saint-Germain striker Neymar was banned for three matches on Friday with a further two-match ban suspended for lashing out at a fan following the club’s shock defeat in the French Cup final.
Announcing the ban, the French football federation said the sanction would go into effect from May 13 allowing the Brazilian superstar to appear for the French champions against Angers in Ligue 1 on Saturday.
But he will miss the last two games of the domestic season and the French Champions Trophy...

Reeling away as he scored a sublime chipped goal in the French Cup final on Saturday, of course Neymar’s celebration was all about him.
No thanks were given for the brilliant slide through ball assist from Angel Di Maria. But it was understandable, given the Brazilian had spent three months on the sidelines and missed Paris Saint-Germain’s ignominious Champions League exit to Manchester United.
It was after the second leg in Paris in March, and Marcus Rashford’s injury-time penalty –...
