Far from all diamonds are bright and white. Beyond those graded as colourless, and others with just a trace of yellow to them, lie warmer tones that are a little less bling. Seen by some as more sophisticated, they have lately been catching the attention of jewellery designers and celebrities in the know.
Witness Kim Kardashian resplendent in a brown and white diamond necklace for the Jeff Bezos – Lauren Sánchez wedding in July, while Taylor Swift slipped on a vintage cognac and white diamond...

There have been whispers in the world of luxury that wellness and spirituality will be the industry’s next guiding themes. While traditionalists in Europe might still be making up their minds about this marriage, it’s already integral in Asia.
“In Chinese culture, the idea of harmony between body and mind [is] deeply valued. People believe that natural materials carry energy and vitality from the Earth, helping restore calm and balance,” explains Sissi Xu, managing director, Greater China, at...

Jewellery design’s latest shift isn’t about bigger stones or brighter sparkle. It’s about leaving gems exactly as they were when they were prised from the ground. Unpolished, rough stones are being used in a growing number of high and fine jewellery collections. Once seen as merely the starting point of finished gems, they’re now prized for their texture, irregular shapes and raw beauty.

In the rarefied world of jewellery, the brightest light apparently comes from the deepest origins. This year, the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) – the foremost arbiter of diamond standards for more than 90 years – has drawn an unmistakable line between the treasures of the Earth and their laboratory-made counterparts.
On June 2, the institute announced that by year’s end, its famed 4Cs grading system – cut, colour, clarity, carat – will no longer apply to lab-grown diamonds. Instead,...
