A number of underperforming international car brands are likely to either exit the mainland Chinese market or scale down operations, as losses mount due to falling sales and shrinking market share.
Carmakers delivering fewer than 1,000 units a month already faced a do-or-die situation in the world’s largest automotive market because the weak sales were not enough to cover their manufacturing and operating costs, according to analysts.
Some carmakers are likely to follow Skoda, Volkswagen’s...

Like many elder Chinese millennials, Alice Yu was deeply saddened last week when she heard the joint venture that made Jeeps in China had declared bankruptcy.
The 40-something recalled her then-boyfriend giving her an unforgettable gift in the early 2010s: an imported Jeep Grand Cherokee costing more than 400,000 yuan (US$55,700).
At the time, Yu was an up-and-coming media manager living in Shenzhen, and the luxurious SUV seemed to symbolise the “American dream” of freedom and prosperity that...

Canada will put 25 per cent retaliatory tariffs on US-made vehicles in response to the Trump administration’s import taxes on foreign autos, Prime Minister Mark Carney said Thursday.
The Canadian tariffs will apply to vehicles that are not compliant with the US-Mexico-Canada Agreement, and on the “non-Canadian content” in cars and trucks that are shipped from the US under the rules of that trade deal.
In other words, the Canadian auto taxes largely mirror the structure of the US auto tariffs –...

In its day, Beijing Jeep has been more than just a sturdy, boxy ride through the streets of the capital; it has symbolised America's dreams of selling the cars that rule the roads of China, as well as highlighting the dangers of the joint-venture system.

Beijing Jeep's fortunes in the cut-throat mainland industry have been as up and down as a speedy run sown some of the city's-side roads. Changing gears is like pulling elephant tusks, the suspension looks the part but does precious little to...

Missing drainage worker found dead in valley

A 34-year-old drainage worker who was reported missing by his wife more than two weeks ago was yesterday found dead at the bottom of Tsung Tsai Yuen valley, off Tai Po Road. The man had last been seen working on drainage in the area on May 18, but searches had proved fruitless. It was only when colleagues reported a foul odour that officers were called in and the man's body was found. Police said there was no suspicion of foul play. A postmortem...

Eighteen men have been arrested after two forestry officials were killed in a violent confrontation between villagers and lumber workers in Gansu province, a provincial newspaper reported yesterday.

The violence highlighted tension among rural villages where rivals often fight over control of resources, ignoring orders from local governments.

The Min county Government sent in dozens of police officers to control the situation. The county Government oversees Yanjia village, where the clash...

On two occasions, I have almost been run over at the tram stop on Wong Nai Chung Road, Happy Valley.

Two months ago, a foreign lady drove her car past a stationary tram as I was alighting. She even honked her horn and glared at me for crossing the road while she was driving down the road. She probably thought she had the right of way, which is not the case.

Again on Sunday, April 18, at 8pm, my son and I were nearly run over by a white jeep at the same stop.

We thought we were safe, as a...

From the commercial birth of the automobile in the 1920s, Americans have always subscribed to the thesis that you are what you drive. And that, in most cases, has meant driving big. The heyday of the huge gas-guzzling 'house on wheels' came in the 60s and 70s, when parking spaces were plentiful and petrol was as cheap as Pepsi.

A downsizing occurred in the 80s, when Americans began favouring compactness and reliability over size, and flocked to Japanese imports. That did not last long, because...

THANKS to Britain's drink-driving laws and hopeless rural bus services, most people now live in ghastly suburbs, centimetres from their next-door neighbours and never more than 200 metres from a speed bump and a traffic jam.

Their cars are expensive to buy and to run, environmentally unfriendly and, even if they can hurl themselves along at 240kph, the coned-off roads will not allow it. Nor will the speed bumps. Nor will the sheer volume of traffic.

Today, in suburban Britain, the car is...

AFTER standing with one hand on a Suzuki for 52 gruelling hours, 33-year-old Kelly Lam won the new car, worth $185,000.

The Snapple/Hit Radio-sponsored competition started on Friday with 49 contestants having to keep one hand on the jeep, with the winner being the last person remaining.

However, after heat and exhaustion had taken their toll, the organisers called a halt to the competition with four competitors remaining. Mr Lam then won a quick-fire skill contest and took home the car.
