Crosby in Triple Gold Club

With Canada’s victory over Russia in the 2015 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship final, Sidney Crosby joins the IIHF’s Triple Gold Club.

The 27-year-old Canadian superstar’s formidable resume already included two Olympic gold medals (2010, 2014) and a Stanley Cup ring with his Pittsburgh Penguins (2009). Crosby also owns a World Junior gold medal (2005) and silver medal (2004). He is the first player to become a "Triple Gold Captain", having captained Canada to Olympic and World Championship gold and Pittsburgh to the Stanley Cup.

In Crosby’s only previous Worlds appearance in Latvia 2006, he led the tournament in scoring with 16 points, becoming the youngest player ever to do so at age 18. However, Canada lost the bronze medal game to Finland that year.

“It is a great honour joining the Triple Gold Club. I’ve been fortunate to play for some great teams,” Crosby said. “You need some luck too. Guys have played in different events and sometimes you don’t get the luck. I feel pretty fortunate to be a part of this and we could do it as a group.”

The centre from Cole Harbour, Nova Scotia becomes the 26th member of the Triple Gold Club and the ninth Canadian player. The others are Rob Blake, Joe Sakic, Brendan Shanahan, Scott Niedermayer, Chris Pronger, Eric Staal, Jonathan Toews, and Patrice Bergeron. Mike Babcock, also of Canada, is the only coach ever to earn membership.

At age 27, the two-time Hart Trophy and Art Ross Trophy winner (2007, 2014) has very few gaps in his trophy case, in or out of sanctioned IIHF competition. He did not win a Memorial Cup with the QMJHL’s Rimouski Oceanic in 2005, and he has yet to play in a World Cup of Hockey. Today’s victory is another landmark in a remarkable career.
