Hat-trick hero Wayne Rooney says goal drought never bothered him as Manchester United roar into Champions League group stage

A Wayne Rooney hat-trick fired Manchester United back into the group stage of the Champions League with a 4-0 win, 7-1 on aggregate, in their play-off second leg at Club Brugge on Wednesday as Lazio crashed 3-0 at Bayer Leverkusen, 3-1 on aggregate.
Rooney’s treble was also a timely return to form for the England striker, who had gone 10 games without a goal for United prior to Wednesday.
United – who missed out on Champions League football last season – will discover their group opponents in Thursday’s draw in Monaco.
To be honest, if I didn’t have a strong character, that [the criticism] might have affected me. I wasn’t worried. It is early days and when the chances came, I took them
“To go through to the group stage after being out of it last year is a great result. We look forward to the draw now,” said Rooney.
“It was a big disappointment last year not to challenge in it. We didn’t think it would be as comfortable as it was, but it was vital we went through any way we could.
“Over the two legs we deserved that. We’ll enjoy the draw and it is nice to be back in there again.”
