Chinese swimming star has told Sina Sports of his goals for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games next summer.
“I want to show my own speed in Tokyo, which belongs to China,” the swimmer said.
“The Tokyo Olympics is everyone, not only me, but the athletes all over the world are marching toward this goal. When it comes to speed, what I have to do is to work hard.
“From the beginning of my swimming, [my coach] Zhu (Zhigen) told me that it is not easy for every athlete to participate in an Olympic Games.

“I have already done it: Olympic Games, seven world championships, three Asian Games, and five National Games. Of course for athletes it is not the success or failure of medals and rankings, but more of persistence. This is even more commendable.
“Taking a gold medal is what every athlete wants, but this is not the hardest thing. The hard part is how to maintain such a high-intensity and high-level process for 10 years,” he said.

Sun might not make it to a third Olympic Games next summer where he would be in line to win a fourth gold medal depending on the outcome of his visit to the Court of Arbitration for Sport next month.
The Chinese star was cleared by swimming governing body Fina earlier this year for destroying samples at an out of competition dope test at his home in Zhejiang last year.
Wada has taken the case to the CAS in Switzerland where the 27-year-old faces a lifetime ban from the pool.

Despite the impending case, Sun was cleared to compete at the world championships in South Korea last month.
He won gold in the 400m and 200m, but his victories were greeted with protests by Australian rival Mack Horton and Britain’s Duncan Scott at the medal ceremonies for those events.
Horton, who has a long-standing feud with Sun dating back to the Rio Games in 2016, refused to share the podium despite winning silver in the 400m, while Scott refused to be photographed with Sun after claiming bronze in the 200m. Sun called the Briton a “loser” afterwards.

The issue divided swimming, with Chinese fans leaping to defend their star swimmer, doubling down once it emerged that Horton’s Australia teammate Shanyna Jack had missed the world championships after failing a doping test ahead of the meet.
Sun’s lawyers last month requested that the CAS hearing be public “to be fully transparent and to clear his name.” The court is obliged to make hearings public if an athlete requests it.
There is still no exact date confirmed for the hearing.
