Tokyo Olympics: ‘Goddess of Weightlifting’ Kuo Hsing-chun wins Taiwan’s first gold in dominant 59kg display

Taiwan has its first gold medal at the Tokyo Olympics, courtesy of the “Goddess of Weightlifting”.

Kuo Hsing-chun dominated the women’s 59kg weightlifting event on Tuesday, setting Olympic records in the snatch (103kg) and the clean and jerk (133kg), as well as with her total (236kg).

Turkmenistan’s Polina Guryeva (217kg total) took the silver medal and Japan’s Mikiko Andoh (214kg) won bronze.

The 27-year-old Kuo’s first lifts in the snatch and clean and jerk were higher than any other competitor managed in three attempts.
