Joseph Schooling’s hopes of defending his Olympic 100m butterfly title are over after the Singapore swim star clocked 53.12 seconds to finish last in his Tokyo 2020 heat on Thursday evening.

The 26-year-old’s time was not good enough to qualify for the semi-finals, with American world-record holder Caeleb Dressel equalling Schooling’s Olympic record in his heat (50.39) at the Tokyo Aquatics Centre.
