Hong Kong’s men’s table tennis team failed to follow the women into the quarter-finals after losing 3-0 to France in the Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium on Sunday.
It was a frustrating day for Wong Chun-ting, Ho Kwan-kit and Lam Siu-hang in the round of 16 encounter. Lam and Ho lost 3-0 to French duo Emmanuel Lebesson and Alexandre Cassin in the first match, before top-ranked paddler Wong lost 3-1 to Simon Gauzy.
Ho then lost his singles game 3-0 to Lebesson to round it off, with the Paris-based paddler proving something of a bête noire for Hong Kong table tennis at these Games.
It was Lebesson and partner Yuan Jia Nan who accounted for Doo Hoi-kem and Wong Chun-ting in the mixed doubles in a controversial clash.

Lebesson’s serve on the decisive match point appeared to be a let to the Hongkongers but the French duo and the match official ruled it in favour of the Europeans and a strong Hong Kong medal hope was dashed. It was nowhere near as close in the men’s team event.
“The two teams were close but every match we had to fight against them,” Wong said.

“Real competition is different from training and we felt that on some of the big points, we were not doing well,” Ho said.
“I have played my best games and delivered what I had,” Lam said. “But I need to look at my performances and how I played some of the key points, especially in the closing stages.”
Lam said the players felt they could not have done more. “We tried our best to play against France, they are a really strong team. The result was not good but we all tried our best. The result is not good but every one gave everything,” he said.
