Cricket, lacrosse and breakdancing are among nine sports that have been invited by organisers of the Los Angeles Olympics in 2028 to present their case for inclusion in the Games.

The other five – baseball/softball, motorsport, kick-boxing, squash and flag football – were also told they could submit ROIs for the sport programme review.

Officials will hear submissions later this month from the governing bodies of the nine sports, with a decision expected ahead of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) meeting in Mumbai in the middle of next year.

The IOC has also said there is a “pathway” for boxing, weightlifting and modern pentathlon to join them.

Cricket bosses are proposing that T20 be played at the Olympics, and the format is being played at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, with women contesting it for the first time.

The International Cricket Council has made no secret of its desire to return to the Olympics for the first time since 1900, the same year motorsport was included.

“We have declared the ambition to be involved in the Olympic Games,” Geoff Allardice, the ICC CEO, said. “We are assisting the LA28 organisers and providing them the information for their assessment of different sports in regard to the addition to the Olympic programme.”
