He just wanted to be a friendly neighbourhood Spider-Man and spread some election love but he only earned the wrath of security officials after disrupting game five of the Philippine Cup final basketball game in Manila – leaving one player on the floor.

The man was later identified in news reports as 31-year-old Paolo Felizarta, who ran on to the court at Arenta Coliseum on Friday holding yellow signs reading “vote love” and “our future is in our hands” referring to the country’s general election on Monday.

Social media naturally latched on to the incident, given it is only two weeks since the release of Avengers: Endgame and less than two months before Spider-Man: Far From Home hits cinemas.

Borrowing lines from the Avengers films, Filipinos went to town on social media platforms. “Mr Stark, I don’t feel so good,” wrote Marcus Dantes, quoting Peter Parker’s line to Tony Stark/Iron Man at the end of Avengers: Infinity War before he turned to dust.

Ervin Lee described the scene as: “When you hit the wrong infinity stone. Say Sorry to Mr Stark.”
