Jeremy Lin has decided to give the NBA one last shot, choosing not to return to the Beijing Ducks of the Chinese Basketball Association after a single season.
Lin has found form in his time in China, despite the league stopping for five months as the country battled the spread of the coronavirus pandemic. It was certainly an unusual season.
In spite of that pause, quarantine on his return from the US after Lunar New Year and then the league resuming in a bubble, Lin was not knocked off course.
He says that he found his game in China; the question now is where can he take it next?
‘I’m not chasing the shadow of Linsanity,’ says Lin on NBA hopes
NBA free agency comes around in October when this season ends in the Disney Bubble in Orlando.
Most teams will already be planning for next season as the current NBA is still ongoing but the number of teams involved is down to just four.

They are the Celtics and Heat in the East and a rerun of the 2010 conference final in the West where the Lakers meet the Nuggets after the latter took the Clippers in Game Seven, after being 3-1 down in the series.
Even they will have an eye on next season and filling the holes in their rosters.
So who will take a shot on the 32-year-old? Here are some possible destinations:


Golden State Warriors
This would mark a return home for the Bay Area native. Lin grew up in Palo Alto before heading to Harvard for college and it was the Warriors that took the chance on him after he was overlooked by every team in the 2010 NBA Draft. Injuries hit the team hard last season, notably to Steph Curry, and Lin offers both depth and experience. The Warriors have been linked with Lin, although conflicting reports have suggested they are in the market for a wing – perhaps Lin’s shortlisting for CBA Defensive Player of the Year could swing the decision?


New York Knicks
This would be, in the eyes of many, the chance for the Knicks to make up for losing Lin, where he had briefly become the most talked-about athlete in world sports during the “Linsanity” period in 2012. The Knicks have been linked with a move for Toronto Raptors’ Fred VanVleet, but Lin would present a much more affordable option at point guard. It would also be a move that would make the New Yorkers relevant in the global sports headlines for the first time since they last made the play-offs, in the season after Lin left for Houston.


Houston Rockets
They were bounced in five after going one up against the Lakers and are in need of new faces. One new face will be on the bench to replace coach Mike D’Antoni, who has said he is going, but that will not change the commitment to “small ball” in Space City. Rockets owner Tilman Fertitta said that GM Daryl Morey will lead the search for the new coach and given it was Morey’s tweet that soured the NBA’s relationship with China, where the Rockets were off air all season, signing the most popular player in the country could help resolve matters.


Whichever team Mike D’Antoni coaches next
The coach who had Lin during his “Linsanity” days at the Knicks and then took him to the Rockets has handed in his notice to the Texans. D’Antoni will be a free agent and depending on where he pops up next a reunion could be on the cards.


Atlanta Hawks
Another former team, and another that are tipped to tilt for a point guard when free agency opens up. The Hawks are built around the considerable talents of Trae Young, who Lin mentored during his time in Atlanta. Young has expressed his admiration for his mentor so why not link them up again?


Boston Celtics
A veteran, who would come in cheap, works for the NBA championship chasing Celtics as they are unlikely to want to rock the boat too much after this season – which could still end in glory as they take on the Heat in the Eastern Conference Finals.


Los Angeles Clippers
The Clippers are the butt of basketball’s jokes after losing a 3-1 lead to the Denver Nuggets and seeing their bubble burst. Lin played with star man Kawhi Leonard at Toronto and was rumoured to be on the Clippers’ radar last summer. Why not this year?


As we saw from last year, where every team with an open roster spot that was also lacking depth at point guard was linked with Lin, he will not fail to generate interest – at least in NBA column inches.
