NBA champion Jeremy Lin is one of a number of Chinese Basketball Association players to be retroactively punished for violating the league’s dress code last season, domestic media have reported.

The punishment comes after the CBA announced that it was fining Guangdong Southern Tigers coach Du Feng and player Zhao Rui for offences this season, which began last month.

On October 21, the opening game of this campaign, both player and coach failed to wear Li-Ning brand clothing, the official CBA sponsor, while conducting media duties.

In accordance to league rules, Zhao was fined 500,000 yuan (US$75,600) for his offence, while coach Du was handed a 100,000 yuan (US$15,100) punishment.

The CBA, which is headed by former Houston Rockets star Yao Ming, then looked at last season and handed out retrospective fines for offences.

Liaoning Flying Leopards star Guo Ailun – the first Chinese player to sign with Jordan brand – was hit with a 1.15 million yuan (US$174,000) fine for four violations of the dress code.

Written off as a PR stunt, ‘Linsanity’ began even before Lin’s NBA debut

Lin, who played for the Beijing Ducks during the CBA’s coronavirus-affected 2019-20 season before deciding to attempt an NBA return for next season, was top of the list.

The X-tep sponsored Lin was fined a total of 550,000 yuan (US$83,188) for three separate offences.

Several players – Guangdong’s Wang Xinkai, Hu Mingxian and Xu Jie, plus Shenzhen’s Bai Haotian, Bayi’s Zou Yuchen and Nanjing Tongxi’s Tursun Mardan – were each fined 500,000 yuan for one offence.

Guangdong coach Du, who guided his side to a 10th CBA ring last season, was fined another 20,000 yuan, while Xinjiang’s Zhou Qi was given a 100,000 fine.

The reports stated that the offenders have until December 14 to pay their combined 4.82 million yuan fines or they will be suspended from the league.

Rockets return for Lin can fire Houston back into Chinese hearts

While Lin has left to chase his NBA dream once more, Zou is without a team after Bayi pulled out of the league.
