NBA champion Jeremy Lin’s journey back to the league has moved a step closer as he is in training with the Santa Cruz Warriors ahead of their G League season opener on February 10 and he is being encouraged by one of the best players in the world.
Lin’s focus is clear, as he told fans on social media with a post updating his progress after signing for the G League affiliate of the Santa Cruz Warriors last month.

“Great day 1 of G League training camp! Practice, sleep, eat, repeat,” he wrote on Instagram after the team’s first session together following isolation in Santa Cruz and then again at Walt Disney World in Florida.

The league will be played at the ESPN Wide World of Sports in the same bubble format used by the NBA to finish last season after the league paused for several months because of Covid-19.

Lin was encouraged by his former Golden State teammate and two-time MVP Steph Curry, who commented “Let’s go bro!!!” on the post.

The pair played together when the Warriors took a chance on an undrafted Lin a decade ago, hitting the court more recently ahead of the new NBA season when Lin was pictured playing with several Warriors players ahead of signing for their G League team.

Lin, who spent last season with the Beijing Ducks in the Chinese Basketball Association, had earlier updated fans across his English and Chinese language social media channels of his plans for the season ahead of returning to the court.

“Eleven-day quarantine wrapping up soon! Been a long off-season but almost there to getting back on the court. This year I’m pursuing an NBA comeback through the G League and I’ll be playing for the Santa Cruz Warriors!

The 32-year-old seemed impressed with the progress made by the G League since he last played, back when it was the D League in 2010.

“Training camp starts Sunday for 10 days followed by 15 games from Feb 10-Mar 6. All our games are hosted in the G League bubble at Disney World in Orlando … crazy how nice the league has become since when I was here in 2010.”

Lin, who became the first Asian-American athlete to get a signature shoe with the Xtep JLIN ONE, also looked back on his other career landmarks.

“When I was 22, I was the first Asian-American to make the NBA in 50 years, and all I cared about was being recognised for my skills, not skin colour.

Quarantine a ‘bit annoying’ says Lin as he trains for G League

“When I was 22, I was the first Harvard player to make the NBA in 60 years and all I cared about was what the future held, not the past.

“When I was 24, I had the most points scored in their first 4 starts in NBA history, and all I cared about was how many more I’d score in upcoming games.

“When I was 30, I was the first Asian-American to win an NBA championship, and I was so focused on how I wanted to win another one the way I had envisioned it.

“Now that I’m 32 and more able to cherish and be grateful for the present, I’m going to really soak in this piece of history, rather than immediate move to the JLIN Twos or the next goal,” he said.

The Santa Cruz Warriors shared footage of Lin and the rest of the team in training after their third day on court.

There will be 10 days practice before the team tips off their season.
