Golden State Warriors coach Steve Kerr has spoken of his support for Jeremy Lin after the NBA veteran’s social media post calling out racism against the Asian-American community and claiming that he was called “coronavirus” on court.
Kerr said he would support an investigation into Lin’s claim, which he revealed on Instagram and Facebook on Thursday.
“Being a 9 year NBA veteran doesn‘t protect me from being called ‘coronavirus’ on the court,” Lin wrote. He plays in the G League for the Golden State affiliated Santa Cruz Warriors. ﻿
Speaking at the pregame conference before Friday night’s game against the Charlotte Hornets, Kerr did not mince his words.

“I saw the Facebook post just now, really powerful. I applaud Jeremy for his words and echo his sentiments regarding racism against the Asian-American community.
“It’s just so ridiculous and obviously spawned by many people including our former president [Donald Trump] as it relates to the coronavirus originating in China.
Lin sits out G League, stands up for Asian-Americans
Lin called Trump out directly last March for his use of the term “Chinese virus” in a tweet.
“I wish you would powerfully support the vulnerable people that will suffer due to our mismanagement of this virus, including those that will be affected by the racism you’re empowering,” Lin replied.
At the time Lin also pointed out to violence against Asians in the US.

Violence toward Asian-Americans has risen again in recent weeks, prompting Lin to speak out again.
G League absence ﻿‘just a minor setback’, says Jeremy Lin
Kerr was asked if he would like to see an investigation into Lin’s claim.
“For sure, as I said I saw the post, the reference is a little bit vague. I think it would be good to know what happened.”
The Athletic‘s Shams Charania since reported that the G League will launch an investigation into Lin’s claims.

Kerr also said he could not understand the racists and applauded Lin for speaking out.
“It’s just shocking, I don’t know, I can’t wrap my head around any of it but I can’t wrap my head around racism in general, you know, we’re all just flesh and blood, we’re all just people, we’re all – as Pop [Gregg Popovich] once said to me, we’re all accidents of birth.
“We’re born, we come out the way we are and we don’t have a say in it. What we do have a say in is how we treat people. It’s shocking to me that we can treat each other so poorly based on the colour of skin, whatever it is, so I applaud Jeremy for speaking out.”
