Brian Goorjian is one of the most successful basketball coaches in Australia, leading the national men’s team to their first Olympic medal in the sport at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

But Goorjian, who is set to take over as head coach of the newly formed Bay Area Dragons in the East Asia Super League, said success in Asia would rank among the top achievements of an already impressive career.

“I think it’s going to be huge,” Goorjian told the Post from his base in Melbourne. “This would be right up there with the biggest thing for me, which was winning a bronze medal with the Boomers.”

For the past two years Goorjian has served as head coach for National Basketball League (NBL) side Illawarra Hawks, in addition to his coaching work with the Boomers.

Last month, he said he was stepping back from Hawks to take up the head coach role with fledgling Hong Kong franchise Bay Area Dragons, an opportunity he said was too good to turn down.

“The Illawarra job was unbelievable and I was happy, but this was a no-brainer,” he said.

“To have the opportunity to be on the ground floor of something like this really excites me. If I can be a link between Australia and Asia and have a role in shaping and bringing it to life, I think that’s amazing.”
