Floyd Mayweather might return … for a billion dollars, says Andre Ward, who suggests Canelo rematch
- All-time great Ward thinks ‘Money’ could be tempted out of retirement if there is a ‘B’ on the pay cheque
- ‘A Canelo Alvarez fight could do something like that’
Andre Ward has said he thinks Floyd Mayweather could be tempted out of retirement again – if he’s offered US$1 billion to get back in the ring.
“Money” came out of his first retirement to fight UFC star Conor McGregor in 2017, before hanging up his gloves again.
But that didn’t stop him fighting an exhibition bout against Japanese kick-boxer Tenshin Nasukawa on New Year’s Eve, where he banked US$9 million for 140 seconds of work.
“He’s [Floyd] 50-0, 50 fights and 50 training camps. That’s enough,” pound-for-pound all-time great Ward said on Joe Rogan’s YouTube podcast. “He’s retired on, what, three different occasions? Came back, benefited from it. I think he’s good. Selfishly I would love to see it but realistically I think he’s good.”
UFC commentator Rogan said he believed a fight that could generate a massive amount of money, like a Manny Pacquiao rematch, is the only thing that could tempt Mayweather out of retirement again.
“What’s a massive amount of money?” asked Ward, who retired undefeated in 2017 after winning multiple world titles at super middleweight and light heavyweight. “Because he’s had a massive amount of money, umpteen times. I think he would do it for a ‘B’ [billion dollars. If there was a ‘B’ behind it or like a strong 750 million [dollars] with upside. Like, Floyd ain’t turning down a ‘B’.
