Hong Kong boxer Ruru Yang Sheau-ru wrote her name into the history books in Bangkok on Thursday, becoming the city’s first female to win a regional title.

Fighting in her fourth career bout, Yang was put to the test by Thai boxer Saowaluk Nareepangsri before outlasting her experienced opponent to take home the vacant WBC Asia Super Flyweight crown.

Unlike her previous knockout wins, the Hongkonger had to go the distance and fought all eight rounds at Spaceplus in the RCA Plaza before being awarded a majority decision win.

Two of three judges awarded the fight to Yang – with scorecards of 77-75 and 78-74 – while the third had it a draw at 76-76, and the newly crowned champion admitted she was “surprised” by her opponent.

“I would love to have kept my knockout records intact but instead I won by a decision after completing all eight rounds,” 28-year-old Yang said.

“Nareepangsri is stronger than I thought and I wasn’t expecting her to last all eight rounds – she is definitely the toughest fighter I had ever faced so far.”
