Billed as the ‘world’s highest-altitude bike race’, the event got off to an embarrassing start as one cyclist was run over by a motorbike, then descended into farce 3km from the finish line in the city of Xining as a man strolled into the road right in front of the peloton, causing a gigantic crash.
Reports in China said the man, believed to be mentally ill, was not seriously injured and was arrested.
Four or five cyclists were hospitalised, the reports said.
