Britain's Johanna Konta makes strong start against Samantha Stosur in WTA Elite Trophy quest
The top-seeded Briton cruises to an easy win over Australian Samantha Stosur in the round-robin tournament in Zhuhai
Top seed Brit Johanna Konta cruised to victory on day two at the WTA Elite Trophy event in Zhuhai yesterday, beating Australian Samantha Stosur 6-4, 6-2.
It was Konta’s first time back on court since withdrawing from the Prudential Hong Kong Tennis Open with an abdominal injury.
“Against a player like Sam, who plays such a big ball and has such a big game, I really had to do my best to stay there for every single point and take my chances whenever they came,” Konta said.
The decisive win during the US$2.2 million tournament guarantees her a spot in the top 10 of world players.
In the day’s other matches, world number 18 Timea Bacsinszky of Switzerland bounced back from a loss to China’s Zhang Shuai to defeat Hungary’s Timea Babos 6-4, 6-2 while Czech Petra Kvitova won 6-1, 6-2 in straight sets over Roberta Vinci of Italy.
