It was supposed to be a new start for the Chinese national team set-up. Instead it was yet another setback, and save for an inspired rearguard action, it could have been worse.
World Cup-winner and Ballon d’Or recipient Fabio Cannavaro was handed the reigns of the China national team last week and the hope was he could work on the foundations laid by his mentor Marcello Lippi, who has stayed on with the China Football Association in an advisory capacity, to build towards qualification for World Cup 2022, which begins in June.
The Italian’s reign has started with a whimper after his side were outplayed and outfought by the world No 115 ranked visitors from Thailand in the China Cup.

China supporters were outraged by yet another humiliation, and a large group of them gathered after the game to demand the disbanding of the national team.
Chanathip Songkrasin struck the only goal of the game to put his side into the final of the annual mini-tournament hosted in Nanning, China.
