Chinese media and fans turned on Wei Shihao for a “shameful” and “evil” tackle in the national team’s 1-0 defeat by Uzbekistan on Monday night.

The 23-year-old injured Otabek Shukurov, who will reportedly be out for around two months after Wei launched himself off the ground into the winger’s leg with his studs raised.

“It was not deliberate. It was just a technical decision to slow the rhythm of the game,” Wei said in a post-match interview.

“I don’t know if he is injured. Tough physical challenges in football are common so injury is inevitable.”

Wei was given just a yellow card after arguing with the referee, but could reportedly face a more severe punishment from his Chinese Super League club, Guangzhou Evergrande, whom he signed for last month.
