Chinese speedskating coach Zhang Jing quits Hungary national team after allegedly racist comments made against China by her charge

Zhang Jing, head coach of Hungary’s short-track speed skating team, has resigned over what she described as racist comments made by Hungarian Olympic champion Burjan Csaba, according to reports on the mainland.

The Chinese coach made the announcement in her WeChat account on Tuesday, saying she was “astounded and outraged by the racist comments against China made publicly by the speed skater and resigned immediately as the head coach of Hungary’s short-track speed skating team”.

Reports said Csaba swore at a Shanghai airport after he had to queue up for an hour before clearing immigration for a World Cup series event in China at the weekend. He posted the incident on his own social media account and it was later deleted. It was reported the speed skater had been sent back to Hungary. The 25-year-old was a member of the Hungarian team that won a gold medal in the men’s 5,000-metre relay at the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympics, the first ever for his country, while Zhang was their coach.

Zhang said the behaviour of the Olympic champion was unacceptable and demanded an apology from the Hungarian Ice Skating Federation.

The mainlander became the head coach for the Hungarian short-track speed skating team in 2012 after training two young Hungarian skaters whose father was from China. She has since led the team to win more than 150 medals in world-level events. The two brothers, Sandor Liu Shaolin and Liu Shaoang, were also members, with Csaba, of the Pyeongchang Games gold medal winning team.

Zhang’s action was strongly applauded by mainland netizens, who said her behaviour had defended the integrity of the country.
