After months of speculation the Chinese Basketball Association has confirmed that the league season will resume after its coronavirus suspension on June 20, according to an official statement. An announcement on their Weibo account said that the CBA’s new proposal had been approved by the Sports and Health departments, with preparations for the restart well under way. The CBA is the first of China’s major sports to announce a restart. The 16 rounds remaining of regular season will be played in just two cities, Dongguan in Guangdong province in the south and Qingdao in Shandong province in the north. They said that all teams, players and staff would abide by national and local epidemic prevention laws. Many had pointed to a CBA restart as a possible plan for the NBA to follow when it comes out of its coronavirus suspension. Initial plans to restart the CBA as early as mid-April were rejected by the General Administration for Sport and Centre for Disease Control. Many of the CBA’s foreign players who had returned overseas were called back by their teams but not all have returned. Foreigners were blocked from entering China in late March. Double practice and double portions – Jeremy Lin shares his day For this reason the CBA have implemented a policy regarding foreign players for the remainder of the season, amending the so-called “Bayi rule” for when teams with overseas talent play the all-Chinese Bayi army team. In games between teams with two foreigners playing a team with one overseas player, the foreigners can play five combined quarters. In games that feature a team with two foreigners against an all-Chinese team the foreigners are limited to four combined quarters. Jeremy Lin was one of the foreign players to return and after completing quarantine he joined his Beijing Ducks teammates in returning to training in April. The Ducks are in the hunt for a place in the play-offs.
