Chinese Women’s Super League side Wuhan Jianghan University have apologised for their part in a brawl started by Shanghai Shenli footballer Camila Martins de Aguiar on Saturday.
The top of the table clash, played behind closed doors in Kunming, descended into chaos once Shanghai’s Camila was shown a red card and attacked Wuhan’s Wu Haiyan from behind.
The incident happened in the dying seconds of the game between the sides, who are also known as Shanghai Rural Commercial Bank and Wuhan Jiangda, and saw players and staff from the Wuhan bench race onto the pitch to join the fray.
The club, which is a partnership between the university and local FA, apologised for the “individual coaches’ and athletes’ impulsive violations due to the lack of strict management of the club” in a statement posted on Weibo on Sunday.
“The behaviour disappointed the audience, disappointed the fans‘ hopes, discredited the image of women’s football and caused negative social impact,” it said.
