China’s Zhang Shuai can reach a career best fourth round at the French Open when she faces France’s Clara Burel on Saturday.
The meeting with 19-year-old former junior world No 1 Burel is Zhang’s reward for beating another home favourite Alize Cornet on Thursday.
Zhang’s win came in straight sets 6-4, 7-6 (3) to reach the third round for the second time in her career after 2017 where she lost to Svetlana Kuznetsova.
“It was a really hard-fought victory,” Zhang told Xinhua after her win over Cornet.

“Alize is good at playing on clay court. She is resilient and flexible in tactics. You won‘t never beat her with ease.”
The 31-year-old from Tianjin beat Madison Keys in this year’s first round at Roland Garros.

Zhang, who is yet to serve an ace at this year’s French Open, has reached the quarter-finals of both the Australian Open and Wimbledon.
She also progressed in the women’s doubles on Friday with partner Veronika Kudermetova after beating Belgian pair Greet Minnen and Alison van Uytvanck 6-3, 6-3.
The eighth seeds face ninth seeds Sofia Kenin and Bethanie Mattek-Sands in the third round on Sunday.
