Australian basketball star Andrew Bogut has called time on his career after 14 years in the NBA, with many Chinese social media users reacting with “RIP”.

The outspoken Bogut had become a target following his criticism of swimming star Sun Yang and several other incidents in recent years, with several commenters keeping up the vitriol on his retirement.

The 36-year-old centre, who won an NBA championship in 2015 with the Golden State Warriors, announced the decision on his own podcast, Rogue Bogues.

Bogut, who was drafted as the No 1 pick in 2005 by the Milwaukee Bucks, had teased the episode as one where he would announce where he would play next season. Instead, he announced he was calling it a day.

“The decision hasn’t been an easy one, but I think it is the right decision. The decision that I made and where I will be signing for next season is absolutely nowhere. I will be retiring from professional basketball, effective immediately,” Bogut said.
