The 1-0 win sees the Chinese Super League side into the quarter-finals for the first time and they became the first team into the quarter-finals pot in the East Asian zone.

This season’s second stage is decided by a single game, rather than over two legs, and games are taking place behind closed doors in Doha in measures against the coronavirus pandemic.

Bruno Genesio’s side were unbeaten in the group stage, racking up a club record 16 points, and were strong favourites going into the meeting with Tokyo.

They lived up to the tag but had to wait for an opener. Alan Carvalho, the Brazil-born, naturalised Chinese forward on loan from Guangzhou Evergrande, settled the game with a goal just before the hour.
