Beijing Guoan made history with an AFC Champions League win over J League side FC Tokyo in Qatar on Sunday night, moving a step closer to a first Asian crown. The 1-0 win sees the Chinese Super League side into the quarter-finals for the first time and they became the first team into the quarter-finals pot in the East Asian zone. This season’s second stage is decided by a single game, rather than over two legs, and games are taking place behind closed doors in Doha in measures against the coronavirus pandemic. Bruno Genesio’s side were unbeaten in the group stage, racking up a club record 16 points, and were strong favourites going into the meeting with Tokyo. They lived up to the tag but had to wait for an opener. Alan Carvalho, the Brazil-born, naturalised Chinese forward on loan from Guangzhou Evergrande, settled the game with a goal just before the hour. A Lan, as he is known in China, had already gone close to opening the scoring before finally taking his chance, slotting home from inside the box after Renato Augusto laid it on. Cannavaro waiting on US$30 million payout: reports It was Augusto who went closest to scoring a second as the CSL side eased into the quarters. Victory puts the Beijing side within three wins of a first AFC Champions League crown and a date with destiny on December 12, where Iranian giants Persepolis await in the final, having won the West Asian zone in September. The draw for the quarter-finals takes place on Tuesday with the games on Thursday. Fellow Chinese Super League club Shanghai SIPG face Vissel Kobe on Monday night for a place in the last eight.
