Beijing Ducks coach Xie Libin was banned for four matches by the Chinese Basketball Association on Monday after leading his players off the court during Sunday’s loss to the Shenzhen Aviators, with the Chinese Basketball Association handing out 60,000 yuan (US$9,260) worth of fines to the team. The CBA fined Xie 20,000 yuan (US$3,090) for his actions, which included him stonewalling the media in the postgame press conference. Beijing Ducks captain Zhai Xiaochuan was fined 30,000 yuan (US$4,630) for his part in the controversy that greeted a late refereeing call with the scores tied at 92-92 and less than two seconds on the clock. Zhai led the protests against the decision to hand a technical foul to Beijing’s Liu Xiaoyu and hand three free-throws to Shenzhen’s Askia Booker, with Xie leading his team off the court. This led to a 10-minute delay before the game resumed, with Booker sinking his three free-throws to finish the game 95-92. “As a Beijing team member intentionally kicked the courtside seats and the drinking machine inside the team’s room suffered damage after the match, the league’s governing body also imposed a fine of RMB 10,000 (US$1,540) on the Beijing team and ordered the club to compensate for the drinking machine within a given time,” Xinhua reported. Beijing Ducks begin life without Lin by storming off court Xie will not return to the sidelines until January 25 when the Ducks face the Shanxi Brave Dragons.
