CBA: Jimmer Fredette scores 70 points for Shanghai Sharks in China – and still loses

  • Star’s third 70 point-plus game of only 10 total in Chinese Basketball Association history, no other player has done it twice
  • Former NBA and BYU player’s China high of 75 still short of Errick McCollum’s CBA record 82 set in 2015

Shanghai Sharks star Jimmer Fredette hit 70 points in the Chinese Basketball Association on Monday but his team still lost 136-129 to the Sichuan Blue Whales after two overtime periods.

Fredette’s 70, which came in 54 minutes, is the highest score of the CBA’s 2020-21 season. He is averaging 25 points per game this season after 31 games. It was his third time scoring 70 or more in the CBA, of only 10 total 70-point games in league history. No other player has done it twice.

Former Brigham Young University standout Fredette – who played in the NBA for the Sacramento Kings, Chicago Bulls, the New Orleans Pelicans, New York Knicks and Phoenix Suns – shared highlights of his third CBA career 70-point game on Twitter.

The 70-point haul is not Fredette’s biggest in Sharks colours. He most recently helped himself to 75 in a game against Beikong in 2018, scoring 40 in the fourth quarter as once more he ended up on the losing side.

Pierre Jackson hit a game-winning three for the Beijing side, the last of his 63 points in the game.

Fredette also posted 73 in February 2017, in another double overtime loss – this time to the Zhejiang Golden Lions. This is second stint with the Shangai side after leaving in 2019 to sign for Phoenix.
