This year’s World University Games, which were to be hosted in Chengdu in August, have been postponed until next year, organisers confirmed.

Conflicting reports over the future of this year’s event had led to confusion as to whether the games would happen as planned.

Many observers were viewing them as a road map for how China may host the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics next year.

However, the International University Sports Federation (FISU) announced the decision to push the games back until 2022. There is no new date for the event.

In a statement the organisers confirmed that the decision was taken with the local organisers and made “due to the global Covid-19 situation and international travel restrictions at present, with rescheduled dates to be agreed upon by relevant bodies.”
