Reigning champions Guangdong Southern Tigers drew first blood in the 2020-21 Chinese Basketball Association Finals, beating the Liaoning Flying Leopards 88-83 in the series opener in Dongguan.

The foul-heavy game was played in front of fans in the CBA bubble in Zhuji.

Guangdong coach Du Feng praised his team’s solid defence as they go for a third championship in a row, while Liaoning’s Yang Ming pointed to the “gap in strength” between the teams and said that there are lessons to be learned.

“We need to learn from them, and personally I have been trying to learn from coach Du,” Yang said.

Liaoning player Zhao Jiwei said it is not over.

“It was an intensive match but this is not the end. The games to come will be tougher so we need to keep it going.”
