The power of the internet means that you will probably have seen the story of the Chinese football club owner who not only played himself but insisted that the coach played his 126kg son. You might have even seen it more than once as it spread online.

It has spread like wildfire, reported by media outlets from Argentina to South Korea and social media users sharing the story from the so-called “football banter” accounts, some of which have hundreds of thousands of followers. It had even ended up on the pages of Golf Digest online.

Zibo Cuju have been reported as the team in question with owner He Shihua said to have instructed his unnamed son (but accurately weighted) be picked by the coach.

Social media users have also shared video highlights purporting to be the “126kg son” playing for the Zibo club in the Chinese league.

Further details have been added as the story made its way from Twitter to the web pages of globally renowned newspapers from The Sun in England to Spain’s AS, Italy’s Correire Dello Sport and Portugal’s A Bola. Later it has been in South Korean media.
