It was a day of mixed results for Chinese players at the French Open on Monday as Zheng Saisai advanced to the second round for the first time but Zhu Lin failed to make the most of her chance to go through.
Zheng beat Spain’s world No 49 Sara Sorribes Tormo, coming back from losing the first set to progress 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 in two hours and 41 minutes at Roland Garros.
The world No 57 will face Marta Kostyuk of Ukraine in the second round after the teen beat former French Open champion Garbine Muguruza (Spain). Zheng’s victory over Torres was only the second time that she had beaten a top 50 player after overcoming Monica Puig in the first round of the 2016 US Open.
Zhu also lost her first set 6-4 to No 28 seed Jessica Pegula (US) and looked to have got back in the game with a 6-4 second set win.

The final set saw Zhu and Pegula level at 4-4 with the American serving, but the Chinese world No 99 spurned five break points.
Zhu followed 20-year-old former world junior No 1 Wang Xiyu out in the first round.

There are two more Chinese players that will hope to join Zheng in the second round in action on Tuesday.
China No 1 Wang Qiang meets Taiwan’s Hsieh Su-wei, while fellow Taiwanese Liang En-shou plays world No 51 Fiona Ferro (France).
Elsewhere, Varvara Lepchenko (US) stands in the way of Chinese No 2 Zhang Shuai.

World No 39 Wang is the highest ranked Asian woman left in Paris after world No 2 Naomi Osaka of Japan pulled out of the tournament on Friday.
